National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants

* Certified Physician Assistants (PA-C)
Certified physician assistants are non physician medical providers licensed by the State Medical Board to practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician.  In order to be certified and eligible for licensure, a physician assistant must pass a nationally standardized medical board examination.  Physician assistants are qualified to prescribe medications in all 50 states, and are trained initially in general medicine before training in specialty areas such as orthopedics.

OPA employs only licensed and certified physician assistants trained and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic/musculoskeletal conditions.  At the surgeon’s request, and with the consent of the patient, physician assistants may be present during surgery to provide a skilled extra set of hands during more complicated procedures.  Physician assistants are often readily available to answer patient’s questions and provide follow up care when surgeons are away or assisting other patients.  The surgeon, physician assistant and medical assistant comprise the essential care giving teams at OPA.
