Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine typically caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth (congenital). Often, the specific cause is unknown (idiopathic). Scoliosis may also result from secondary causes such as muscular atrophy, cerebral palsy or trauma to the body.

The spine may appear on an X-ray to have an S- or C-shape instead of straight alignment.

Scoliosis management is extremely complex and the prognosis and approach taken is often determined by the maturity of the skeletal system and the extent of the curvature. Orthopedic Physicians Anchorage is pleased to offer complete diagnosis and treatment services for this debilitating condition right here in Alaska.
